Gold Rams

Papilochromis ramirezi

Rams are among the most peaceful of all cichlids and can be a little sensitive to water conditions. Provided that they are kept in quite clean water that is low in nitrates, and are not subjected to sudden changes in water quality, most keepers should not have problems. Regular partial water changes with a good conditioner will help to maintain best health and will usually be suitable for breeding. They like a tank with some room for swimming and also require retreats among plants, rocks or ornaments. The Gold Ram shown to the right is the albino strand of this species.

These cichlids usually pair up with just the one partner (compared to many other cichlids which may have a bunch of females for the one male). They prefer the water temperature to be around 24-26°C and pH or between 6.5 and 7. These cichlids will spawn on rocks or in pits dug in the gravel and both parents guard the eggs and protect the fry. It is not essential to leave the parents with the eggs, so they may be removed to a separate tank if necessary. They may lay around 300-400 eggs, and these should hatch in around 3 or 4 days and will be free swimming and require feeding after about a week.

Rams are omnivorous so they will do well on a mix of both meat and vegetable based foods. They prefer live foods such as brine shrimp but will accept flake, pellet, frozen shrimp, worm foods, beef heart, and other vegetable-based foods.

Due to variations within each species, your aquatic life may not look identical to the image provided.
