Cherry Fire Shrimp
Caridina serrata
The Cherry Fire Shrimp originates from the swamps and streams of Japan and Asia. They have gained popularity due to their large size and appetite for all kinds of freshwater algae. These are beautiful shrimp that gain a bright red coloration. They are peaceful, and are a great addition to any peaceful freshwater aquarium.
An established freshwater aquarium or pond of at least 50 litres with plenty of hiding places and algae with a mature substrate are the ideal setup for the Cherry Fire Shrimp. It should be housed with small peaceful fish or koi that will not pose a threat of eating these shrimp. They prefer water that is slightly on the acidic side, and will handle a wide range of water temperatures.
The Cherry Fire Shrimp is very difficult to breed, and very few have been able to raise the larvae to maturity. Their average lifespan is 2 to 3 years in captivity.
Cherry Fire Shrimp are omnivores that will consume algae, detritus and left over food. If insufficient food is present, supplement with a quality flake food or pellet.
